Course Overview:
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) is an Ofqual-regulated qualification recognised across vocational education and training in the UK. It replaced the legacy A1 and A2 Assessor Awards and is now the accepted standard for qualified assessors working in regulated and non-regulated contexts.
The CAVA covers two distinct assessment modes:
Both are required. This is not a theoretical overview of assessment — it is a practical qualification built around what assessors actually do.
It is recognised across a range of occupational sectors including healthcare, education and training, construction, business administration, hospitality, public services, and vocational skills training.
Entry requirements
To enrol, you must:
Hold current occupational competence in a specialist area (employed or recently practising)
Have confirmed access to learners you can assess during the course
Be working at or above Level 2 in written and spoken English
No prior assessor qualification is required. If you are new to formal assessment but experienced in your field, this is the right starting point.
If you do not yet have a teaching qualification, the Level 3 AET is the recommended first step before or alongside this course, particularly if you are moving into a full training and assessment role.

One requirement is non-negotiable: you must have access to real learners you can assess as part of this course. This is a portfolio-based qualification — evidence must come from live assessment practice, not simulated scenarios.
WHY THE CAVA QUALIFICATION IS IMPORTANT?
Assessment is one of the most consequential activities in vocational education. A poor assessment decision affects a learner’s qualification, their career, and the integrity of the standards that professional bodies and employers rely on.
That is why qualified assessors are not optional in regulated settings — they are required. Awarding organisations, Ofsted, and regulated training providers all require assessment to be conducted by individuals holding a recognised assessor qualification. Without CAVA (or an equivalent), you cannot formally assess learners on accredited programmes.
Beyond compliance, there is a professional dimension. Good assessment is not just about passing or failing learners. It involves planning assessment strategies, selecting methods appropriate to the evidence needed, making consistent and fair decisions, and giving feedback that develops learner competence beyond basic assessment. The CAVA develops all of these various aspects of professional assessment. .
For those already informally assessing in the workplace, this qualification formalises and validates your existing role — and makes it credible to employers and external verifiers.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Unit 1: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
The conceptual and regulatory foundation of assessment practice. You will study the principles of valid, reliable, fair, and consistent assessment — and why each of these is important. This unit also covers assessment planning, the range of available methods, your legal responsibilities (including equality legislation and data protection), and how quality assurance frameworks operate around assessor practice. This is the unit that prevents assessors from making decisions they cannot justify.
Unit 2: Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment
The practical core of workplace assessment. You will plan and carry out observations of learner performance in real work settings, collect and evaluate evidence of competence, make and record assessment decisions, and provide structured developmental feedback. This unit is evidenced through direct observation records, assessment plans, and learner feedback documentation from your own practice.
Unit 3: Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
Assessing what learners know, not just what they can do. This unit covers knowledge-based assessment methods — questioning, assignments, tests, and portfolio review — and requires you to demonstrate competence in judging evidence beyond direct observation. This is particularly relevant for assessors working with distance or blended learners, or in programmes where not all competence can be observed live.
COURSE DELIVERY
Fully online taught elements — study around your working week with no fixed attendance or timetable commitments.
Portfolio-based assessment — your evidence comes from your actual assessment practice. This means the course requires you to be actively assessing learners during your study period, not after it.
Structured guidance at each stage — your tutor will support you in understanding what evidence is required for each unit, how to structure your portfolio, and how to document your assessment decisions to assessor standard.
No cohort dependency — you progress at your own pace. Some learners complete in six weeks; others take longer depending on learner access and workload.

STUDY DURATION
Typical completion: 6–12 weeks
The timeline is driven primarily by learner access — how quickly you can complete sufficient observed assessments and gather portfolio evidence. Learners with ready access to a cohort and consistent study time typically complete toward the lower end of that range.
There are no set deadlines after enrolment. However, assessor competence develops through practice — learners who engage consistently produce stronger portfolios and complete faster.
