2. Study the Theory

Attend live Zoom sessions twice a month for guided teaching, then work through radiation physics, biology, legislation (IRR17 and IR(ME)R), technique, anatomy, image quality, and QA in your own time between sessions

3. Complete Your Logbook

Build your NEBDN competency logbook within your practice — recording radiographic procedures, witness testimonies from your GDC-registered supervisor, and reflective entries across all defined competency domains

4. Prepare for the Exam

Complete Trainigo’s structured mock examinations aligned to the current NEBDN written paper format, and review legislation and technique under exam conditions

5. Qualify and Get Entitled

Pass the NEBDN written examination and have your completed logbook accepted. Your employer then formally entitles you as an IR(ME)R Operator under the practice’s Local Rules — and your radiographic duties begin

Assessment Method

The NEBDN Certificate in Dental Radiography is assessed through two components, both of which must be completed to the required standard for the qualification to be awarded.

1. NEBDN Written Examination

A formal theory paper testing your knowledge across the full NEBDN Certificate syllabus — radiation physics, radiation biology, IRR17, IR(ME)R 2017, radiographic technique, anatomical identification, image quality, and quality assurance. Held at NEBDN-approved centres on scheduled dates throughout the year.

2. Competency Logbook (Record of Competence)

A structured clinical evidence portfolio recording your developing competence in dental radiographic procedures within your own practice. Entries require witness testimony from a supervising GDC-registered professional and must cover the range of techniques and procedures defined by NEBDN across all competency domains. The logbook must be completed to the required standard before you are eligible to sit the written examination.

Your NEBDN Certificate demonstrates your training to any employer. However, IR(ME)R entitlement is practice-specific — you must be formally authorised as an Operator under each practice’s Local Rules. If you change employer, your new practice will need to add you to their Local Rules. This is a straightforward administrative step once you hold the qualification.

Most learners complete within 4–8 months. The primary variable is the volume and range of radiographic clinical work available in your practice, as this determines how quickly you can complete the NEBDN competency logbook.
