Before you start in practice, arrange your enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and begin your Hepatitis B vaccination course — a series of doses over several months, so start early. Most practices require both before a trainee joins the clinical team.

Assessment Methods

The qualification is assessed via three distinct methods — all three must be completed and passed for the NEBDN National Diploma to be awarded.

1. Portfolio of Evidence (PoE)

Throughout your training, you will compile a workplace-based digital portfolio using NEBDN’s designated platform, PebblePad. It is internally assessed by your training provider and must be submitted at least 4 weeks before your summative assessments.

No. The NEBDN National Diploma is designed to take you from the very beginning. You do not need any prior clinical experience to enrol — but you will need to secure a role in a GDC-registered dental practice in order to complete the practical and portfolio requirements of the qualification.

Yes. This is a requirement of the NEBDN qualification — not just a Trainigo policy. Practical competence must be developed and evidenced in a live clinical environment. Online learning alone cannot fulfil the portfolio and competency requirements. If you are not yet placed, speak to our team about how to approach practices.

Yes — the qualification is designed for this. The online theory is fully self-paced with no fixed attendance hours. The practical element is completed during your normal working hours in the dental practice. Most learners hold full-time or part-time positions throughout their training.

Most learners complete within 12–18 months of consistent engagement. The timeline depends on your study pace, the clinical experience available in your workplace, and your readiness for the NEBDN assessments. The flexible structure means you are not constrained by academic term dates.

The Professional Discussion replaces traditional practical examinations such as the OSCE. It is a 60-minute online interview with a qualified NEBDN examiner (including 10 minutes of reading time), in which you work through scenario-based questions that assess your clinical decision-making, professional judgement, and behaviour in realistic practice situations. Trainigo’s preparation programme includes scenario-based practice sessions that build your confidence in structuring responses and demonstrating clinical reasoning clearly.

NEBDN permits resits of failed components. If you do not achieve the required standard in the Knowledge Test or Professional Discussion, you can resit those specific components at a subsequent sitting without repeating anything you have already passed. Your Portfolio of Evidence, once accepted, does not need to be resubmitted. Your Trainigo support team will help you identify where to focus and provide targeted preparation support for the resit.

Yes. The NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing is the primary qualification accepted by the General Dental Council for dental nurse registration in the UK. On successful completion, you are eligible to apply for GDC registration and use the legally protected title of Dental Nurse.

Your portfolio is the clinical competency record you build throughout your training using PebblePad — NEBDN’s designated digital platform. Post-registration, you can undertake NEBDN Certificates in Dental Radiography, Oral Health Education, Fluoride Varnish Application, and Dental Sedation Nursing — each expanding your clinical scope and professional value.

Most practices require an enhanced DBS check and evidence of Hepatitis B vaccination before a trainee joins the clinical team. The Hepatitis B course is administered as a series of doses over several months, so we strongly advise starting it as early as possible. Our team can advise on timing and what to arrange first.
