Building Your Dental Nursing Workforce With Trainigo Partner With Us to Recruit, Train and Retain GDC-Registered Dental Nurses

Who We Are?

Trainigo trains the next generation of dental nurses through the NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing, delivered through flexible online study paired with structured workplace training. [Insert brief, accurate company history / credentials — years operating, pass rates, or accreditation detail — to be confirmed before publishing.] We work directly with dental practices across the UK to place motivated trainees, support their development, and see them through to GDC registration.

What We Do?

We recruit committed, career-focused candidates who want to become qualified dental nurses — most arriving new to the profession. We prepare them with structured theory, match them with dental practices where they can build genuine clinical competence, and support them every step of the way through to their Portfolio of Evidence, Knowledge Test, and Professional Discussion. Alongside the core Diploma, we also offer a range of post-registration CPD courses — Dental Radiography, Oral Health Education, Fluoride Varnish Application, and Basic Life Support — so your team’s development doesn’t stop at qualification.

Working in Partnership

Training a dental nurse to NEBDN standard is a shared responsibility between the training provider, the trainee, and the sponsoring practice. A trainee’s clinical competence is built chairside — under your supervision, in your practice, with your patients. Getting that partnership right benefits everyone: your trainee progresses faster, your qualified staff spend less time troubleshooting, and your practice gains a nurse trained around your own way of working.

To support your trainee’s progress, we ask sponsoring practices to:

  • Provide regular, honest progress updates on your trainee’s development
  • Support the trainee’s day-to-day clinical work and give them exposure across a reasonable range of procedures
  • Nominate a suitably qualified, GDC-registered member of staff to act as workplace mentor and portfolio witness
  • Raise any concerns about conduct, competence, or wellbeing early, so we can act on them together

In return, Trainigo provides:

What We Provide

Why It Matters to Your Practice

Structured online theory learning

Trainees arrive at the chairside with a working knowledge of anatomy, materials, and procedure — less time spent explaining the basics

Continuous access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

Self-paced study around your rota, not a college timetable

Portfolio of Evidence guidance (PebblePad)

We coach trainees on what strong competency evidence looks like, reducing the burden on your mentor to explain the assessment process

Knowledge Test and Professional Discussion preparation

Trainees sit their NEBDN assessments properly prepared, reducing the disruption and cost of resits

Responsive learner and practice support

A point of contact when questions come up — for the trainee and for you

Emphasis on professional, patient-centred conduct

Trainees are coached to understand GDC Standards for the Dental Team from day one, not just exam technique

Recruiting a Trainee Dental Nurse

If you have a vacancy for a trainee — full-time, part-time, or apprenticeship-style — we can put you in touch with enrolled learners who are actively seeking a placement. Many of our trainees are ready to start quickly and come to you already engaged with their theory learning, so there’s no delay waiting for a first day of “proper” training.

How it typically works:

Step

What Happens

1. Tell us what you need

Share your vacancy, working pattern, and the kind of candidate that would suit your team

2. We match you with learners

We introduce you to enrolled or prospective trainees suited to your practice

3. You interview and select

The employment relationship and terms are agreed directly between you and your trainee — you retain full control over who joins your team

4. Trainee begins in practice

Your new trainee starts their workplace training and Record of Experience while continuing structured study with Trainigo

5. Ongoing support throughout training

We stay involved — supporting the trainee’s progress and available to you if questions arise

Already have an unqualified team member you’d like to formalise through the NEBDN Diploma? We enrol existing staff, too — no need to recruit externally if you already have the right person in the room.

Supporting Your Trainee’s Portfolio: The Workplace Mentor and Witness Role

Every NEBDN trainee must build a Portfolio of Evidence — a workplace-based digital record of competencies, witness testimonies, and reflective practice, submitted via PebblePad. This can’t be done from a classroom; it depends on a suitably qualified colleague in your practice being willing to observe, sign off, and feed back on real clinical work.

What being a workplace mentor or witness involves:

  • Observing your trainee performing chairside duties and confirming competence against NEBDN’s assessment criteria
  • Providing honest, constructive witness testimony that reflects what was actually observed
  • Giving regular feedback so the trainee knows where they’re progressing well and where they need more practice
  • Flagging any competence or conduct concerns to Trainigo promptly, rather than waiting until assessment time

This is a genuine time investment from your senior team — which is exactly why we build as much structure and guidance around it as we can, so your mentor always knows what “good evidence” looks like rather than guessing.

Compliance and Commitments

Hosting a trainee dental nurse means bringing them into a GDC-registered clinical environment, so certain standards are non-negotiable on both sides.

What we expect to be in place before a trainee starts in your practice:

  • GDC registration of the practice and supervising clinicians, in line with GDC Standards for the Dental Team
  • Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check for the trainee, arranged before their clinical start date
  • Hepatitis B vaccination status confirmed or in progress — this is a multi-dose course, so trainees are advised to start it early
  • Cross-infection control procedures consistent with HTM 01-05 decontamination standards, which trainees will be trained on and expected to follow
  • Appropriate clinical supervision at all times, particularly during a trainee’s early months

Trainigo’s role is to prepare trainees in the theory and expectations behind these standards before they ever set foot in your surgery — but day-to-day compliance in practice is a shared responsibility. If you have questions about what’s required before a placement can begin, our team can talk you through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to be a GDC-registered practice to host a trainee?

Yes. Hosting a NEBDN trainee requires the practice and supervising clinicians to be registered with the General Dental Council, since the trainee’s Portfolio of Evidence and Record of Experience must be built and witnessed in a live, regulated clinical environment.

Who employs the trainee — us or Trainigo?

You do. Trainigo supports the training and education side of the relationship; the employment relationship, pay, contract, and working pattern are agreed directly between your practice and the trainee.

Is there a cost to recruiting a trainee through Trainigo?

No, the service is completely free! Speak to our team for a full detail.

What does our practice actually need to provide day to day?

Clinical supervision, a reasonable range of procedure exposure, a nominated mentor/witness for portfolio sign-off, and honest, timely feedback on the trainee’s progress. Trainigo handles the theory, assessment preparation, and portfolio coaching.

How long is a trainee in the Portfolio of Evidence and Record of Experience process?

Most trainees complete the full NEBDN Diploma, including workplace evidence and Record of Experience, within 12–18 months, depending on study pace and the range of clinical experience available in your practice.

Can we take on more than one trainee at a time?

Yes, subject to your practice having sufficient capacity for supervision and mentoring. Group bookings and multiple placements can be discussed directly with our team.

What happens if a trainee isn’t progressing as expected?

Raise it with us as early as possible. Early, honest feedback from your workplace mentor lets us step in with additional support before a minor issue becomes a barrier to completion.

Can our existing unqualified team members enrol, rather than us recruiting externally?

Yes — this is one of the most common ways practices work with us. If you already employ someone in an unqualified support role who wants to formalise their skills, we can enrol them directly onto the NEBDN Diploma.
